1. FYI
September 11th is an especially heart wrenching anniversary for D1SR. The
attacks happened in our back yard, just blocks from our headquarters, we see
a visual reminder everyday of the great loss our nation has suffered. Many
of you raced forward when everyone else was racing away.
You dropped everything you were doing to answer the call for your nation.
You found crews and manned vessels and went wherever the CG needed. You were
in the air as soon as the FAA allowed. You stood the radio watch and took
comms for Active Duty units. You did all of this while the ash was still
falling and the smoke filled the skies of New York, and you did this 24
hours a day, 7 days a week for the long duration after the attacks.
You stepped up security, you worked out watch schedules you sacrificed time
with family to answer the call.
We will be forever changed by the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01 but have
bounced back and we are more prepared than ever before. We have
strengthened our internal security practices and screen every member for
suitability for service.
We modernized and expanded our AUXNET radio system; we learned how to
communicate with other emergency responders (ICS) and we made our resources
more accessible to the Coast Guard via Map Point.
As you reflect on the events of Sept 11, 2001 and the tragedy all of us have
felt, I urge you to also reflect on the positive contribution you have made
to the safety and security of this great nation.
We are stronger because of your contribution and I thank you for continuing
to serve.
